Displaying the ancient
This week I had the pleasure of fabricating a custom display stand for this 65 million year old triceratops fossil. This piece took a lot more work than the standard measure and build approach.
I spent hours with the customer creating a detailed plan of both the bone and the stand prior to fabrication. Once the piece was put together we spent another couple of hours tweaking each contact point to make sure that the bone sits exactly on the supports and is perfectly balanced.
Finishing this piece has given me an inspiration to build an imaging system of some kind for these difficult to hold pieces. Who know what will come of it, but maybe there will be something a little sci-fi built at the forge in the next couple of years!
